With less than 24 hours to go before Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States, details of the ceremony are being revealed.
Among other specifics, it’s been announced that the President’s first dance at the Liberty Ball this evening with wife Melania will be to Frank Sinatra’s infamous song ‘My Way’, which will be broadcast live on TV and online.
Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy said a few weeks ago that if her father was alive he would not have accepted an invitation to perform when a fan asked her via Twitter.
Whilst of course it’s impossible to know for sure what Sinatra’s response at being asked would have been, Nancy’s definitive answer makes sense when we reflect on Frank’s character. He would work with artists of minority races during a period of time when few other artists would and fought for equality both in public and private. Furthermore, he was a considerate financial supporter of Martin Luther King.
Now Nancy has been asked how she feels about the prospect of one of her father’s most famous songs being used at the event. Nancy simply tweet-replied ‘Just remember the first line of the song.’
Of course she is referring to “And now the end is near”.
It therefore, seems the Trump camp has inadvertently chosen a very apt song for very different reason than they thought, considering the concern of how Trump presidency will unfold. Furthermore, ‘My Way’ is the most-played song at British funerals.
According to Sinatra’s other daughter Tina, he grew to despise the song which continued to grow in popularity throughout his career and beyond. Tina said, “[he] always thought that the song was self-serving and self-indulgent.” Once again, perfect for the soon to be President of the United States.
At the celebratory concert this evening before the inauguration tomorrow it’s been confirmed performers will include Toby Keith, 3 Doors Down, Jon Vought and DJ Ravi Drums and not Kanye West despite being pictured with Trump late last year at the Trump Tower in New York.
A spokesperson for Trump when asked claimed that this was ‘not the venue’ for Kanye as it was a ‘traditionally American event’. This is ironic considering Irish dancer Micahel Flately will be performing and ‘My Way’ will be prominent as the first dance song, a song despite popularised in English by Sinatra was originally written in French.
