May The 4th Be With You

It’s that time of the year again where Star Wars fans pay homage to the greatest cinematic saga of all time. The pun is rolled out year after year celebrating Star Wars Day and allowing its fans to effuse even more love and adoration for the beloved franchise phenomenon.

Strangely enough it’s believed the pun originates from 1979 when it was said to Margaret Thatcher to congratulate her on becoming Prime Minister.

May is a significant month for the franchise as firstly it’s the month of the creator Matt Lucas’ birthday, and secondly the original Star Wars film premiered May 25th 1977.

This year, May the 4th is particularly special however, following the much awaited, box-office smashing, new film last year and the beginning of the latest trilogy: The Force Awakens.

In 2012 Disney bought the Star Wars franchise from LucasFilms for an estimated $4bn. To celebrate this year both Disney and LucasFilms are using this unofficial holiday to raise over $2million for the ‘Force for Change’ charity.

As expected, Star Wars fans have been out in force on Twitter to show their dedication for the day:

May the 4th be with you! Comment below with how you’ll be celebrating.
